Otakon 2019 Convention Report

Otakon 2019 Convention Report

Last weekend from July 26-28, 2019 was Otakon’s third year in the nation’s capital. Since moving to Washington, D.C. from its longtime home of Baltimore, Otakon has been able to better serve its attendees the anime goodness that was sometimes lacking in Baltimore due to its over-crowded nature. Besides some minor hiccups Otakon ran pretty smoothly and was a great time for everyone.

Anime Midwest 2019 Convention Report - SMFH Edition

Anime Midwest 2019 Convention Report - SMFH Edition

Sigh, where do I even begin with this convention report? I recently attended the Anime Midwest convention held in Rosemont, Illinois (outskirts of Chicago) from July 5-7, 2019. This is the first time that I’ve been to this convention as it is outside of my usual travel radius for cons. However, when I saw in the news that Japanese singer and songwriter Lia was invited as a guest of honor I quickly made travel plans to be there. Lia is best known for her vocals on various Key/VisualArts anime shows like Clannad, Air, and Angel Beats. I absolutely love her voice and had always hoped to see her invited as a guest to a convention in the US so I knew I had to jump at this chance.

AnimeNEXT 2019 Convention Report

AnimeNEXT 2019 Convention Report

I went to my fourth AnimeNEXT anime convention that was held this past weekend from June 7-9, 2019 in Atlantic City, NJ. At this point people have pretty much made up their mind as to whether or not they like the new-ish location of the convention in Atlantic City (as opposed to its previous location in Somerset, NJ). Some people like the beach-side location while others continue to stay away from the casino city like the plague. Either way, AnimeNEXT continues to offer something for everyone as they offer a wide range of guests, panels, and events.

Katsucon 2019 Convention Report

Katsucon 2019 Convention Report

The 25th Katsucon anime convention took place last weekend from February 15-17, 2019 in National Harbor, MD. This marks the first year that Katsucon has implemented a “Closed Profile” policy which restricts access to the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center only to paid hotel guests and con goers with a membership badge. This new policy was definitely a hot topic of debate in the months leading up to Katsucon and surely will still be subjected to heated discussions in the following weeks.

Anime NYC 2018 Convention Report

Anime NYC 2018 Convention Report

Anime NYC held its second ever anime convention in New York City this weekend from November 16-18, 2018. They built on last year’s wild success of 20,000 attendees to reach 30,000+ attendees this year. This increase definitely showed as the convention floor was much more crowded than it was last year. Anime NYC definitely has much more room and potential for growth as they still only inhabit one end of the Javits Convention Center.

Anime USA 2018 Convention Report - State of the Convention

This was my eighth time attending the Anime USA convention. My first experience with AUSA was during their final year in their Crystal City location (and was my 2nd convention that I ever went to) before moving to the present location at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel in Washington, DC. I’ve had a lot of fond memories during the years at AUSA so it really pains me to have to write what I’m about to discuss concerning the state of this convention.

Otakon 2018 Convention Report

The 25th annual Otakon anime convention was held this past weekend from August 10-12 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.  This is the second year that Otakon has called our nation's capital its home since relocating from its longtime residence in Baltimore.  With a year of experience under its belt, Otakon was able to improve on certain areas to make things run more smoothly while also running into new issues and bumbling mistakes.

AnimeNEXT 2018 Convention Report

The AnimeNEXT 2018 anime convention, which was held this past weekend from June 8-10, 2018, is now in its third year at its current Atlantic City, New Jersey home.  AnimeNEXT has had a somewhat rocky but decent first two years in its new location but things seem to be looking up in its third year.  This year I only attended AnimeNEXT for one day on Saturday but based on the images that I saw on social media about the pre-registration lines on Thursday and Friday, it seems to be a pretty good year in terms of attendance.

Katsucon 2018 Convention Report

The 24th annual Katsucon anime convention was held last weekend from February 16-18, 2018 in National Harbor, MD.  Unofficially they may have surpassed the 20,000+ attendee mark for the first time, but of course we won't know until the official numbers are released.  Even if they didn't reach that milestone, the halls were definitely more crowded this year compared to last year, and that's certainly a healthy sign for what has become the premiere anime con in the DMV region.

Super MAGFest 2018 Convention Report

What is there really left to say about MAGFest that hasn't already been said?  The Music and Gaming Festival took place this year from January 4-7, 2018 in National Harbor, MD.  It continues its fine tradition of melding video games, music, and gaming culture together for an annual 4-day bash.  From concerts, arcades, video games stations, indies, dealers, industry guests, fan panels, and more, MAGFest continues to be one of the best places to celebrate our love of video games (despite the bone-chilling weather!).
